Due to the sensitive nature of this development, there is a limited amount of information we can provide as background to this complex survey.

Objectives

To Survey the entire underground tunnel structure, including the tracing, labelling and mapping of all underground high voltage utility cables, within a limited time-frame.

Progress and Outcome

Our access to the underground facility was limited to a 15 day window of opportunity. Within that time-frame, Vertical Survey Services’ engineers were required to survey the full extent with an HDS 6000 laser scanner, including the marking up/labelling of all cables from entry to exit points. The HDS 6000 scanner has a scan duration 1 minute 36 seconds per setup and it took a total of 266 scans to complete the survey. 

As deliverables, a complete set of drawings for the full extent of the underground system was produced on an Ordnance Survey grid. This included a full map of all utility cables from entrance to exit; levels and clearance heights to all tunnel entries and exits; cross sections at every intersection; and evenly spaced sections between junctions. On hundred and seventeen cross sections were drawn up and labelled in total, including long sections at essential runs. 

Our engineering team completed the site survey works within 10 days, five days ahead of schedule. The completed deliverables were issued to the client within one month of leaving site. The team also provided the client with a copy of our TruView file system, a 3D interactive photo environment of each scanning location. By using the key plan, they could visually inspect and interrogate any point on the tunnel where the scanner was set-up. This enabled any off-site personnel, who had never set foot on site, to remotely view and interrogate the tunnels from a desktop without the risks or costs associated with site visits.
